Apple asks US court to ban Samsung phones, tablets

SAN FRANCISCO: Apple has asked a federal judge to bar US sales of Samsung smartphones and tablet computers in the blockbuster patent case involving the two electronics giants.

In a court filing in California, Apple said the smartphones and tablets were found to have violated patents in a jury trial held last year.

Apple renewed its bid for a permanent injunction on sales of a number of Samsung products after an appeals court decision last month cleared the way for a new hearing on the matter.

In the latest filing dated Thursday, Apple's attorneys wrote that the court "previously concluded that Samsung's sale of infringing products has irreparably harmed Apple."

The document added that the appeals court decision "makes clear that the record evidence... collectively demonstrates a sufficient 'causal nexus' between Samsung's infringement and the irreparable harm to Apple."

Apple added that "money damages are not an adequate remedy for Samsung's infringement of these patents."

The US firm is seeking a ban on Samsung's smartphone models Captivate, Continuum, Droid Charge, Epic 4G, Exhibit 4G, Fascinate, Galaxy Ace, Galaxy Prevail, Galaxy S, Galaxy S 4G, Gem, Indulge, Infuse, Mesmerize, Nexus S 4G, Replenish, Vibrant,Transform and three versions of the Galaxy S II.

Bans are also being sought on the Galaxy Tab and Tab 10.1 tablets.

The request does not affect the newest Samsung devices, which were not at issue in the trial because of the fast product cycles in the industry.

The South Korean firm, the world's biggest maker of smartphones, has been ordered to pay Apple more than $900 million after a retrial on some of the issues in the case.

But the case, one of several being played out in courts and administrative agencies around the world, has not dented sales of Samsung, which has vaulted ahead of Apple in many markets around the world. (AFP)

UAE to launch indigenous satellite in 2017

ISLAMABAD: United Arab Emirates (UAE) vice president and prime minister launched the executive phases for building the first satellite whose parts are solely produced in the Gulf Arab state and which is planned to be placed on orbit by 2017.

The first UAE made satellite will be called Khali Sat named after the UAE President Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan the project would catapult the Arab region into a new era of space industry and competition in space sciences local news agency WAM reported.

While launching the promising project at the Emirates Institution for Advanced Science and Technology (EIAST) UAE Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed said, “Khalifa Sat is a message to all Arabs that Arab ushering into the space era is neither out of reach nor impossible and our state will be a leader in this industry as long as we have the confidence and courage to enter into competition with major countries in this field.”

The prime minister invited the Arab nations to co operate with EIAST. “Our doors will remain open for cooperation with all Arab countries in space technology and engineering,” said Sheikh Mohammed who is also the ruler of Dubai.

The report did not reveal for which purposes the first indigenous satellite would be produced.

Facebook dominates in US rush to social networking

WASHINGTON: The surge into social networks is gaining pace among Americans, with Facebook dominating but with many people using multiple platforms, a study showed Monday.

A Pew Research Center survey found 73 percent of Americans over age 18 on the Internet use at least one social network -- or about 63 percent of the total adult population.

Facebook is the preferred network, used by 71 percent of online adults, or 57 percent of all American adults, according to Pew researchers.

However other platforms like Pinterest, LinkedIn and Twitter are making gains, and a growing number of people are using multiple social networks.

Pew found that 42 percent of Internet users (or 34 percent of all American adults) use two or more of the five most popular social networks.

Use of Facebook rose to 71 percent of online adults from 67 percent a year ago, the study found.

A large part of the growth for Facebook came from older Americans: Roughly 45 percent of Internet users over 65 are using Facebook, up from 35 percent in late 2012.

Four other social networks, including Facebook-owned Instagram, are battling for the number two spot for US users.

LinkedIn is used by 22 percent of online American adults and is especially popular among college graduates and those in higher income households. That is up from 20 percent a year earlier.

Pinterest usage grew sharply to 21 percent of online adults, from 15 percent a year ago. Pew said that women are four times as likely as men to be users of the bulletin-board style social media platform.

Some 18 percent of online adults use Twitter, up from 16 percent a year ago, Pew said, with adoption levels particularly high among younger adults and African-Americans.

Instagram use rose to 17 percent of online adults from 13 percent a year ago, according to the survey. Much of this growth came in the 18 to 29 age bracket and among African-Americans.

Pew found that Facebook and Instagram drew high levels of "user engagement," with a majority of users checking in on a daily basis.

Some 63 percent of Facebook users visit the site at least once a day, and 40 percent do so multiple times throughout the day.

That compares with 57 percent of Instagram users who visit the site at least once a day and 46 percent of Twitter users.

The researchers also found considerable overlap among the leading social networks. For example, 93 percent of Instagram users also use Facebook, as do 83 percent of LinkedIn members.

Some 53 percent of Twitter users also use Instagram, and 53 percent of Instagram users use Twitter, the survey found.

The report is based on telephone interviews conducted from August 7 to September 16 among 1,801 adults age 18 and older. For the total group, the margin of error is estimated at 2.6 percentage points and 2.9 points for Internet users. (AFP)

NASA astronauts step out on Christmas Eve spacewalk

WASHINGTON: Two NASA astronauts stepped out Tuesday on a rare Christmas Eve spacewalk to complete repairs at the International Space Station.

"The 10th spacewalk of the year at the International Space Station is now officially under way," a NASA commentator said at 6:53 am (1153 GMT), as astronauts made a second outing to replace an ammonia pump module whose internal control valve failed December 11.

The main task of the day is to retrieve a spare pump module from an external stowage platform and install it.

NASA astronauts Rick Mastracchio, 53, and Mike Hopkins, 44, made swift work of their first spacewalk on Saturday, disconnecting and pulling out the old cooling pump that regulates the temperature of equipment at the orbiting space lab.

They managed to complete almost two days´ worth of work in a single outing that lasted just five and a half hours, ending an hour earlier than planned.

Flight Engineer Koichi Wakata of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency is operating the space station´s 57-foot (17-meter) robotic arm, which will hoist Hopkins and the new, refrigerator-sized pump module from its stowage platform to the place it must be installed.

Wakata arrived at the space station in November for a half-year stay as part of the six-member international crew.

In March, he will become the first Japanese commander of the space station, NASA said.

Mastracchio is wearing a different spacesuit than he did Saturday, a backup that was stored at the station and was resized to fit him.

A "small amount of water" entered the suit´s cooling system in the space station airlock after Mastracchio finished the last spacewalk, NASA said.

But the US space agency said the problem was not related to the water leak in a helmet that cut short Italian astronaut Luca Parmitano´s spacewalk in July and risked drowning him.

NASA is still investigating what went wrong in that case.

As a backup measure, the astronauts are now outfitted with emergency snorkels in their spacesuits and extra pads to absorb any leaking water in their helmets.

Hopkins and Mastracchio must complete five electrical connections and four fluid connections before the pump can be activated.

"If the spacewalk goes as expected Tuesday, all of the pump replacement work should be completed with just two spacewalks," NASA said.

NASA said tests will be done on the new pump later Tuesday to see how well it is working.

Tuesday´s spacewalk is the second of Hopkins´ career, and the eighth for Mastracchio.

NASA said the last time astronauts embarked on a Christmas Eve spacewalk was 14 years ago, when space shuttle Discovery astronauts Steve Smith and John Grunsfeld stepped out to install upgrades and new insulation on the Hubble Space Telescope.

Later this week, Russian cosmonauts Oleg Kotov and Sergey Ryazanskiy will make a spacewalk on December 27 to install a pair of high-fidelity cameras on the Zvezda service module and to do maintenance on the Russian segment of the station. (AFP)

Apple reaches deal to bring iPhone to China Mobile

NEW YORK: Apple says it has reached a deal to bring the iPhone to China Mobile, the world's biggest phone carrier.

The deal ends a lengthy courtship and could boost sales of the iPhone in China. The iPhone, once hugely popular in China, has been eclipsed by the rise of lower-priced rival smartphones from Samsung and Chinese companies entered the market.

The iPhone 5S and 5C will go on sale in Apple stores and China Mobil stores beginning Friday, Jan. 17. China Mobil customers can register for phones starting Wednesday Dec. 25.

The companies didn't announce pricing or the terms of the agreement.

The iPhone, while popular around the world, has faced tough competition in recent years from cheaper smartphones running Google's Android software. Collectively, Android phones far outsell Apple's iPhone.

Analysts speculate that Apple could sell another 10 million to 40 million more phones if it reached a deal with China Mobile. Some 50 million iPhones have been sold in China in the past 2 1/2 years, according to analyst estimates.

China Mobile is owned by the Chinese government, and has more than 750 million mobile accounts. However, a survey by Bernstein Research said some China Mobile consumers use smaller carriers for data service. Apple already has agreements with China Telecom Ltd. and China Unicom Ltd., which have about 455 million mobile accounts.

China Mobile wants to have the world's largest 4G network, and the new iPhones might help it win over customers. The company received approval to start operating the faster network earlier this month and plans to have 4G services available in 16 cities by the end of 2013. It aims to provide coverage for 340 cities by the end of 2014.

BlackBerry steps back on handset business, shares jump

TORONTO: BlackBerry Ltd (BB.TO) (BBRY.O) said on Friday it was entering a handset production deal that lowers the risk it will have to take more massive writedowns on unsold smartphones, and its shares surged even though it posted dismal quarterly results.

The stock rose as much as 17 percent after the company announced the five-year partnership with Taiwan's Foxconn Technology Co Ltd (2354.TW), which will initially build low-end devices for sale in Indonesia and other emerging markets. BlackBerry said it hoped to expand the fledgling relationship to its top-of-the-line smartphones.

The deal is unconventional in that BlackBerry will no longer pay upfront for components used in the devices made on its behalf in Foxconn's Indonesian and Mexican factories.

Instead, Foxconn will take a share of profit on each device in return for taking on inventory management, which can result in writedowns if smartphones go unsold. Foxconn will also help with developing, designing and distributing the handsets.

Chief Executive John Chen, who took the helm at BlackBerry last month, said he expected the Foxconn deal to help BlackBerry's handset business turn cash-flow positive, and for the company as a whole to post a profit for the fiscal year that begins in early 2015.

"It's almost like BlackBerry is disposing of its consumer handset business without actually disposing of it," said Jefferies analyst Peter Misek, who likened the deal to what Hewlett-Packard Co (HPQ.N) and Dell have done with laptops.

The move, which comes a month after BlackBerry said it was giving up on a plan to sell itself, helped take the sting out of the massive, $4.4 billion loss that it posted for the quarter ended November 30, as smartphone sales shriveled.

A new line of devices running on BlackBerry 10 software has failed to gain traction, forcing the company to write off $1.6 billion of inventory and supply commitments for the quarter. The previous quarter it wrote off $934 million for unsold phones.

The Waterloo, Ontario-based company pioneered the concept of on-the-go email, and for years its pagers and phones were must-have devices for political and business leaders. But in recent years it has lost its once-dominant market share to Apple Inc's iPhone and a slew of smartphones powered by Google Inc's (GOOG.O) Android operating system.

As of Thursday's close, the stock had fallen 47 percent this year. It was last trading up 14 percent on Nasdaq at $7.13.

"The most immediate challenge for the company is how to transition the devices operations to a more profitable business model," said Chen, who is credited with turning around Sybase, a database and mobile software company, before it was sold to German software company SAP AG (SAPG.DE) in 2010.

Chen has said he is counting on strong growth in BlackBerry's service business, which manages smartphone traffic on the internal networks of corporate and government clients.

"Just jettisoning all the stuff and driving on with the part of the business that makes money makes a heck of a lot of sense to me and that is very clearly where Chen is going," said Ross Healy, a portfolio manager at Macnicol & Associates who owns a small number of BlackBerry shares.

Carolina Milanesi, an analyst at Kantar Comtech, said the deal is a good move for Foxconn, the world's largest electronic parts manufacturer and a major partner of Apple Inc (AAPL.O).

"This might be the first step for them to try and diversify, and experiment with putting their brand on the products they make," she said.

DEVICES ARE A CHALLENGE

In his first presentation to analysts after the release of BlackBerry's results, Chen struck an upbeat tone tempered with a heavy dose of realism. The mix may have helped soothe nervous investors who had sharply lowered their expectations for BlackBerry after a string of disappointing news.

"It's clear that he's not the old guard, he's not there trying to do what Lazaridis and Thorsten were up to. He's actually been taking some concrete steps," said Mark McKechnie, an analyst at Evercore Partners, referring to BlackBerry's founder Mike Lazaridis and Thorsten Heins, Chen's predecessor.

Chen moved quickly to stamp his authority on BlackBerry, hiring several former colleagues from his time at Sybase and SAP for senior roles in corporate strategy, marketing, and enterprise strategy, a key unit in the stripped-back company.

BlackBerry sold about 4.3 million handsets in the third quarter, with older BlackBerry 7 models accounting for about 3.2 million of that number.

The company recognized hardware revenue on 1.9 million devices, down from 3.7 million in the previous quarter.

On a brighter note, its cash pile grew to $3.2 billion from $2.6 billion a quarter earlier, but that included $1 billion raised by issuing convertible notes to a group of investors last month after calling off a months-long search for a buyer.

Service revenue slipped 13 percent as fewer people paid to use BlackBerry's secure network, and the company said that level of decline could be expected to continue.

Along with the writedown on unsold phones, the company also slashed by $2.7 billion the carrying value of some long-lived assets, mostly licensing deals made when it was far larger.

QUARTERLY RESULTS

The company reported a third-quarter net loss of $4.4 billion, or $8.37 a share, compared with year-earlier net income of $9 million, or 2 cents a share.

Excluding the inventory writedowns and impairment charges, the loss was $354 million, or 67 cents a share.

Analysts on average had expected a loss of 44 cents a share, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Revenue fell to $1.19 billion from $2.73 billion as increased uncertainty about the company's fate led to further sales erosion. Wall Street had forecast $1.6 billion.

Morningstar analyst Brian Colello said BlackBerry's turnaround strategy was more important than its latest operating results.

"I don't think it's a surprise that the revenue, operating margin and the business continues to decline. I think the bigger question is, what is the turnaround story at this point?" he said. "They have a lot of different assets that could point the company in different directions."..--REUTERS

Almost 1 In 4 People Worldwide are using social media

ISLAMABAD: Internet statistics and market research company eMarketer has released a report entitled “Worldwide Social Network Users: 2013 Forecast and Comparative Estimates”, which estimates that in 2013, almost a quarter of the World’s population will use social media.

The number of social network users worldwide will increase from 1.47 billion last year to 1.73 billion this year. By 2017, eMarketer estimates that 2.55 billion people will use social media, CBC news reported.
The majority of user growth will be in Africa, Asia-Pacific and the Middle East, according to the report’s findings, while Asia-Pacific has the largest social media user base, with 777 million of Asia-Pacific’s inhabitants expected to use a social media platform by the end of the year.
In fact, Asia-Pacific has 44.8% of the world’s social media users, more than three times Latin America’s user base, who sit in second.
The report predicts that by 2014, Latin America and Africa will have surpassed Latin America in second place, while North America will be surpassed by Central and Eastern Europe and, a year later, by Western Europe as well.
Penetration rates, however, flip user base figures on their head: North America and Europe boast the most impressive social network user penetration rates, while Asia-Pacific, Africa and the Middle East prop up the table at the bottom. In 2013, North America will more than double the Middle East & Africa’s penetration rates.
Between 2013 and 2016, the percentage of internet users worldwide who are active on social media will increase from 67.7% to 76.6%, reaching 78.7% a year later. eMarketer reasons that North America, Asia-Pacific”specifically, Japan, South Korea and Australia” and Western Europe have lower penetration figures than the worldwide figures overall because the “advanced countries in these regions tend to have more diverse internet user populations, as users often access the web for a variety of reasons such as shopping or searching”.
Meanwhile, internet users in Africa, the Middle East, Central Europe and Eastern Europe are generally younger and more internet savvy, so are more likely to use social media.

Japan robot chats with astronaut on space station

The first humanoid robot in space made small talk with a Japanese astronaut and said it had no problem with zero gravity on the International Space Station.
Footage released by the robot’s developers on Friday showed Kirobo performing its first mission on the station, talking in Japanese with astronaut Koichi Wakata to test its autonomous conversation functions.
Wakata says he’s glad to meet Kirobo, and asks the robotic companion how it feels about being in a zero-gravity environment.
“I’m used to it now, no problem at all,” Kirobo quips.
Kirobo is programmed to process questions and select words from its vocabulary to construct an answer, instead of giving pre-programmed responses to specific questions.
The creator of the robot, Tomotaka Takahashi, said the autonomous functions meant nobody knew how well Kirobo would be able to answer Wakata’s questions.
Though Kirobo had some awkward pauses and Wakata spoke more slowly than usual at times in their chat earlier this month, Takahashi said conversations smoothed out over time.
“Through layers of communication, we were able to observe the initial stages of a relationship begin to develop between a human and a robot, and I think that was our biggest success” he said.
Kirobo took off from Japan’s Tanegashima Space Center for the International Space Station this summer aboard a space cargo transporter. Wakata arrived in November and will assume command of the station in March.
The project is a joint endeavor between advertising company Dentsu, automaker Toyota, and Takahashi at the University of Tokyo’s Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology.
Experiments with Kirobo will continue until it returns to Earth at the end of 2014.
In the meantime, Kirobo says he wants to ask Santa for a toy rocket this Christmas.

Europe launches billion-dollar Milky Way telescope

PARIS: The European Space Agency on Thursday launched an advanced telescope designed to detect a billion stars and provide the most detailed map yet of the Milky Way and our place in it.

The Gaia telescope was successfully hoisted by a Soyuz-STB-Fregat rocket from ESA´s space base in Kourou, French Guiana, the agency reported in a webcast.

The star-hunter separated from the last of the rocket´s four stages 42 minutes after launch, and mission controllers said everything was fine.

The 740-million-euro ($1.02-billion) device, the most sophisticated space telescope ever built by Europe, aims at building an "astronomical census" of a billion stars, or around one percent of all the stars in the Milky Way.

By repeating the observations as many as 70 times throughout its mission, Gaia can help astronomers calculate the distance, speed, direction and motion of these stars and build a 3-D map of our section of the galaxy.

The stellar haul will be 50 times greater than the bounty provided by Hipparcos, a telescope of the early 1990s whose work provided a gold-standard reference guide still widely used by professional astronomers today.

"Gaia is the culmination of nine years of intensive work which will enable exceptional advances in our understanding of the Universe, its history and laws," said Jean-Yves Le Gall, head of France National Centre of Space Studies (CNES), which is taking a lead role in the mission.

"We are at the dawn of revolutionising our understanding of the history of the Milky Way," said Stephane Israel, boss of Arianespace, which launched the satellite.

A Soviet-era workhorse of space with an excellent record of reliability, Soyuz is deployed at Kourou under a deal to widen Arianespace´s options for the world´s satellite launch market.

Gaia will also help in the search for planets beyond our Solar System -- as many as 50,000 so-called extrasolar planets could be spotted during the satellite´s five-year life, astronomers hope.

It will do this by measuring the "wobble" in light that occurs when a planet passes in front of a star. The tug of its gravity causes a minute deflection in the stellar light reaching the telescope.

Gaia will also observe the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter to help the search for any rocks that may one day threaten Earth, and keep a watch for distant exploding stars, called supernovae, which are rarely observed in real time.

The 2.03-tonne telescope "is so sensitive that it can measure the equivalent of the diameter of a hair at a distance of 1,000 kilometres", or 600 miles, CNES says on its website.

"If Hipparcos could measure the angle that corresponds to the height of an astronaut on the Moon, Gaia will be able to measure his thumbnail," according to ESA.

Gaia will start its star survey in May after taking up position at the so-called Lagrange point L2, located 1.5 million kilometres (937,000 miles) from the Earth, which offers year-round observation of the cosmos without the view being disturbed by the Sun, Earth or Moon.

To stay at L2, the spacecraft will have to perform tiny manoeuvres each month, scrutinised by a network of telescopes on Earth to ensure a hoped-for accuracy of 100 metres (yards).ESA members have set up a network of 30 centres, manned by 450 people, to crunch the raw data, including a supercomputer at CNES´s base in Toulouse, southwestern France, capable of carrying out six thousand billion operations a second.

Even so, it will take years to transform the million billion bytes of input into useable maps and catalogues. (AFP)
